Manor Park Student Accommodation, University of Surrey

Background
Middlesex Flooring were initially put forward by Carpet & Flooring to tender for the annual refurbishment works at one of the student accommodation sites at the University of Surrey in Guildford. CFS have held the specification for over 10 years for the bedroom & corridor element of the project

Approach
Upon being awarded the flooring package by Russell Cawberry, which involved many site visits, planning and organisation, a schedule was put together to make sure labour & product were in place to meet the start date of the flooring installation. The project had a tight deadline to make sure all the work was carried out in time for the students to return for the new academic year in September. Each individual bedroom & corridor was fitted with CFS Europa Cut carpet tiles and each ensuite had Hydro Evolve vinyl by Polyflor installed. The communal kitchens used Wood FX vinyl, also by Polyflor. Gradus CVT5 trims and 100mm PVC Sit-On skirtings were also used across the whole project

Products
3800sqm – CFS ‘Europa Cut’ carpet tile, 1000sqm Polyflor ‘Wood FX’ vinyl, 550sqm Polyflor ‘Hydro Evolve’ vinyl, Gradus accessories & F Ball ‘F41’ & ‘F44’ adhesives

The Result
Middlesex Flooring completed the flooring package a day ahead of schedule with no snagging across the whole job. Both the client and the builder were overjoyed with the finished job. Middlesex Flooring are hoping to be involved on future works at the University

Customer Comments:

“We are really pleased with the finish of the carpet tiles throughout the corridor & bedrooms. The carpet tiles look as if it is a broadloom carpet whilst giving us the flexibility of a carpet tile” – Matthew Bennett, University of Surrey

The Client
London Borough of Hillingdon

Background
We were initially approached by our regular customer Mitie, who wanted assistance in replacing carpet tiles throughout the council offices. The offices were fully occupied and needed to remain operational if any works were to be carried out.

Approach
After meetings with both Mitie and the client we made suggestions as to how we would approach the situation without moving everything and everyone out of the building. Our proposal was to work out of normal working hours using a ‘lift & shift’ installation system to lift up the desks, remove the existing tiles and replace with new ones. This installation method means the minimal of disruption and staff returning the following morning to newly installed carpet tiles

Products
Desso ‘Essence’ Carpet Tiles & F Ball ‘F41’ Tackifier Adhesive

Recycling
As Middlesex Floorings commitment to the environment, they dealt with the recycling of the removed carpet tiles and provided waste transfer notes

The Result
All works were completed on time, on budget and as agreed with the client. The method of lifting and shifting furniture with our specialised equipment has been used multiple times at the civic centre

Customer Comments:

“Middlesex Flooring delivered the fitting of these tiles to a very high standard with minimal disruption. all areas were left clean and tidy with materials and tools stowed neatly even though out of site” – Martin Taylor, Mitie Technical Services

Lymphoma Action; 3 Cromwell Court, New Street, Aylesbury, Bucks, HP20 2PB

Background
We were initially approached by the Chief Executive, Ropinder Gill who heard of Middlesex Flooring through a good customer of ours. They were due to move offices however they decided to update their current facility in Aylesbury. As a charity, funds were limited so they asked if we could assist in updating the floor coverings to bring the offices up to date.

Approach
Lymphoma Action are the only UK charity dedicated to ‘Lymphoma’ which is the 5th most common cancer in the world. After an initial meeting with Ropinder to ascertain what they were looking for, Mark Brown (MFL) enquired amongst our suppliers to see if there was anything anyone could do to help out. Gradus, Gerflor UK & F Ball all came to the party with product and Middlesex Flooring carried out the labour as a goodwill gesture.

Programme
Work started on 3rd June 2019 for 1 week. The building was still occupied so the Middlesex Flooring fitting team worked closely with staff to keep the disruption down to a minimum.

The Result
The refurbishment transformed the offices from looking tired and dated to now appearing fresh and modern. This in turn gave the staff a huge lift in their new working environment.

Customer Comments:

Lymphoma Action were delighted with the result:

“All done and its looks absolutely amazing. Thanks Mark for everything, your team were so lovely to have around’ – ‘Our Offices were due a facelift, but spending money on a refurbishment hasn’t been a priority as we have invested all of our resources into frontline services for people affected by Lymphoma. I expected to hear there was little that could be done but the generosity of Middlesex Flooring and thier suppliers overwhelmed us all at Lymphoma Action and we can’t thank everyone enough for making this happen” – Ropinder.

The Client

CB Hounslow FC, Hounslow, Middlesex.

Background
Middlesex Flooring was approached by an acquaintance, Frank James, who is chairman of CB Hounslow United FC to assist in whatever we can do to help get his project of new clubhouse and facilities completed as they have literally no money left. CB Hounslow United FC is a non-profit organisation which mentors and coaches all children from 5 upwards in a deprived area to try to keep them off the streets. I was very impressed after my meeting with Frank at the football club and the amount of work and his own money from his company that he has ploughed into this project to get it up and running.

Contributors to date are as follows: – Football Foundation, Lord Mayor, London Marathon, Hounslow Council, Sport England, DNata, BJMW (Frank’s company), Club itself fundraising.

Costs have spiralled since the project started in 2001 and is so near the finish line now.

The club has also received an Outstanding Community Award and are the biggest charitable FC in Middlesex.

Approach
As a company, we liked what Frank had done himself to get the project this far and after hearing the story, wanted to help out where we could. I approached various contacts with manufacturers that I know within the trade to see if there was anyway that they could do to help with their plight.

Middlesex Flooring – providing the solution
After several calls and lengthy conversations relaying the story, our contacts too became very involved: Desso kindly donated carpet tiles for the function room, foyer, office and staircase, Gradus Accessories donated aluminium nosings for the staircase, F Ball & Co donated all the adhesives and latex screed required and Tarkett supplied the dance floor for a nominal fee. We in turn provided all labour to install the coverings required FOC.

The Result

  • Installation to fit in with clients requirements.
  • Client delighted with outcome and had their Christmas party in the reception room.

Summary

CB Hounslow FC were delighted with the result:

“If it wasn’t for Craig and his associates we wouldn’t have been able to open the upstairs and more than likely not open until August/September 2018. The upstairs is integral to the running of the business to allow the club to raise its own revenue. The work that has been done is to such a high standard, we almost don’t want to use it”.

Installation of Altro Flooring and Whiterock cladding at Paediatric A&E, Hillingdon Hospital.

The Children’s A&E ward at Hillingdon Hospital was in need of refurbishment and Middlesex Flooring was chosen to install all the flooring and wall cladding throughout the contract. We worked closely with the builders to achieve the handover date and programme deadline.

The materials used were from the Altro Wood Safety Flooring range, Aquarius and Suprema, plus Whiterock Satins and Chameleon Digiclad wall cladding. Digiclad is manufactured to each customer’s bespoke design.

These products were selected to meet high safety standards and hygiene requirements.

Colours were carefully selected to be light & bright with a wood effect oak with a light grey border to the corridor floor areas running into the wards.

The results can be seen in the photographs below:

The project involved mechanically removing all the old latex residues, back to a sound base, ready for applying self leveling compounds, manufactured by F Ball & Co. Our work was carried out out-of-hours to enable the builders to continue with their work.

A photograph of this project is on the 02/2017 sample card for Altro Wood Safety Flooring collection.

It was a challenging project due to time constraints but our Contracts Director, Trevor Clarke, worked closely with the main building contractor, Jarvis Group and the finished installation was of the highest calibre.

The main contractor, Cosmur Construction Ltd briefed us to renew all floor coverings in all communal and circulation areas within the care home. This included, lounges, corridors, stairways and leisure areas. Being a nursing home, there was no way that the residents could leave, so the busy premises had to fitted whilst fully occupied.

Prior to commencing works with the Main Contractor (MC) we planned a program of works which best suited the site and conditions. It was agreed that Middlesex Flooring would latex all the floors through the night when the residents could stay within their flats whilst work was in progress, leaving it dry for foot traffic the following morning. This left no room for error, so the works were planned to the last detail with the MC and the home.

With the assistance of the MC and our dedicated fitting team, we co-ordinated our works in sections around the home with safety of paramount importance. The residents were notified with all aspects of our installation in a timely and safe manner with minimal disruption to all parties.

End Result:

A high quality durable floor that will last for years with the minimum of disruption fitted over night. Completed safely, on time and on budget.

The MC said:

We were delighted with the results. The care home were rightly very concerned about how the work could take place within an occupied building, especially considering the elderly residents. They wanted to make sure that the fitting was 100% safe and did not cause stress to the residents. Middlesex Flooring are specialised in fitting flooring to occupied premises and planned the fitting meticulously. Well done on a great job!

Cosmur Construction.

The Client

C J O’Shea & Co Ltd: Granard Business Centre, Bunns Lane, Mill Hill, NW7 2DZ

Background
Middlesex Flooring were contracted to carry out a full replacement of office carpet to the Head Office over three floors. Several meetings were held to determine specifics, including the programme, price and any constraints that may affect works. MFL were asked for their experience to help select suitable carpet tiles to fit out the offices in Mill Hill. They were also required to carry out the installation at a convenient time with minimum disruption.

The Requirements
Due to a partial shut-down, it was agreed that works would need to be carried out over the Easter period and the week following, as staffing would be at its lowest during this week. Existing adhered carpets had to be removed together with all loose latex, and subfloors had to be made good prior to installing the new floor tiles. All office furniture would need to be moved and replaced during this time, and MFL were to ensure that minimal disruption to working practice was experienced. All possible materials would need to be available as no additional materials could be ordered due to the bank holiday.

Middlesex Flooring – providing the solution
MFL took an extremely pro-active approach to the project and came up with numerous methods of overcoming potential issues, including the use of hydraulic jacks for office furniture.

MFL proposed getting the works completed early over the Bank holiday weekend while the office was completely unoccupied. Despite 70% of their regular labour having been pre-booked in advance, MFL were able to resource the labour, and ensured that materials were on hand for any eventuality.

MFL’s well trained team, expertly fitted and completed the installation from the 2nd down to the ground floor on the Bank Holiday Monday ready for staff arriving on the Tuesday.

The Result

  • Installation in only 3 days
  • Early completion with zero disruption to office staff returning after the Easter bank holiday weekend.
  • All furniture replaced in correct locations
  • Completed on budget to a very high specification

Summary

CJ O’ Shea were delighted with the result:

“MFL’s approach to this project was extremely professional. The preparation and organisation was exceptional, and the team employed to carry out the works were well prepared. They were conscientious of the occupied and furnished environment. We were impressed with their commitment and focus to achieve completion prior to staff returning to work”.
